What are CBD edibles?
It may not occur to you immediately, but any regular food can be a CBD edible. A warm autumn bowl of soup; a tasty pumpkin spice latte; even your bring-to-work tuna mayonnaise sandwich. So how do you do it? Easy, just add MightyMe. Perhaps mix some water-soluble CBD into your favourite stew recipe, a MightyMe Drop into your morning orange juice or some MightyMe into the cookies. Creating and cooking a CBD edible really is that simple.
What’s best about using edibles is that they’re the healthiest and most natural form of consumption. We need food to survive, so if you take CBD too, why not combine them both? As you’re controlling the dose too, and as long as you finish your plate, you should get the desired effects!
Whether you add the CBD to the butter for brownies or infuse CBD into your olive oil to drizzle over your salad, the opportunities are endless. But before you understand more about CBD edibles, let’s dive into what CBD is.
What is CBD?
Well, first up, CBD stands for cannabidiol. It’s a part of the hemp plant, a member of the cannabis family. Though the hemp plant produces a bunch of other compounds, CBD is the one that has recently gained popularity as an alternative remedy in the wellness industry.
“What form is CBD in?” we hear you ask. Well, it comes in many different ways. However, at MightyMe, our water-soluble formulation technique makes it more effective for consumers. But more on that later.
But how do you ingest it? Well, either add some MightyMe to a glass of water or plop a MightyMe on your tongue. Or, read a little deeper and find out more interesting ways of consuming CBD. One of our favourite ways? Well, CBD edibles, of course.
Are CBD Edibles legal in the UK?
Maybe you saw the word CBD and thought – “ILLEGAL!” It’s a fair and innocent mistake. After all, CBD does come from the same plant as THC, the illegal, psychoactive element that produces a high when inhaled or consumed. But THC and CBD are very different.
Due to the increasing popularity of CBD, many high street shops and reputable retailers sell the compound across the UK. That can be as water-soluble products like MightyMe, or as CBD edibles like gummies.
First we should warn you that CBD isn’t legal everywhere, including in Europe. In 2015, the European Union made CBD legal when they began to consider it as a novel food (a food that was not consumed significantly in the EU before 1997). That means when you’re walking down a street in Rome or avenue in Austria you can probably buy it. However, we always advise you to research the law surrounding CBD before taking your CBD products or CBD edibles with you.
How long does it take to feel the effects of CBD edibles?
CBD edibles and other CBD products take different amounts of time to kick in. Some people can feel the effects of CBD oil or CBD vapes after just a few minutes. CBD edibles generally offer a longer-lasting alternative to inhaled CBD products. But ultimately, no two people are the same. So really, there’s no way to measure it with complete accuracy.
A number of factors can affect how long it takes to feel the effects of CBD edibles. Your gender, your weight and even your cannabis tolerance could impact the time from ingestion to impact.
However, when taking CBD edibles, most people feel the difference between 30 minutes to 2 hours. Some quicker, some longer. It depends! But because CBD edibles are broken down in the digestive system, everyone’s individual metabolism has an effect. CBD is metabolised in the liver then released back into the bloodstream. From there, it is sent to the brain. That’s when the CBD edibles kick in.
Say you’ve just eaten a carbohydrate-heavy five course meal then finish it off with a CBD edible. Well, it may take you slightly longer than normal to feel the effects.
What if you skipped lunch? Well, you will probably feel the difference quicker because your body will metabolise it faster. Surprisingly, if your CBD product contains fats, it may need less time to act because fats actually improve the absorption rate of cannabinoids.
The type of CBD edible you choose will change the onset time too. Maybe you checked out our popping CBD lollipop recipe? The CBD effects might kick in faster because some of the CBD content is absorbed by your tongue. This process, called sublingual absorption, means the CBD bypasses the first-pass metabolism in the liver. And that means, faster effects.
If you chew your edible, rather than sucking on them, the onset may be a little delayed. Because the absorption happens in the digestive tract first it takes longer for the CBD to reach the liver. And that means, slower effects.
However, the main thing to note is, once again, that no CBD edible affects anyone the same. But what’s important to work out is what CBD dose is right for you!
Are CBD gummies the same as CBD edibles?
You live in a cave? As a reminder, kids and adults love them so, the happy world of Haribo!? Remember now? Well, a CBD gummy isn’t too different, except it contains CBD, obviously. To keep it easy, a CBD gummy is just a form of CBD edible. And they’re one of the most popular options of CBD edibles – we even have our own recipe!
Some people find that CBD edibles offer a convenient, discreet and tasty option for consuming CBD. Like when you don’t have time to take a full MightyMe dose, or when you don’t want the hassle of mixing a traditional tincture or spray. They’re one of the most accessible ways of consuming CBD edibles.
Are you getting the maximum benefits from your CBD edibles?
There’s been a bunch of research on the consumer health benefits of CBD. However, when ingesting CBD, there are some ways better than others.
All compounds of the hemp plant – including CBD – are fat-based in their native state which sadly means they are often poorly absorbed when ingested. That means consumers are less likely to feel the effects CBD offers. And that’s annoying. But that’s also why more research is taking place.
Many researchers are studying cannabinoids to understand the rate, onset and duration of CBD absorption when consumed. The researchers’ main discovery was that converting CBD from fats into water-based formats drastically improves both absorption amount and rate. The second thing they found was that the ingredients and processes used to convert the CBD into water-based formats has a massive impact on how quickly consumers absorb the CBD.
According to a study, water-soluble CBD formats may have increased blood absorption by up to 434% compared to oil-based formats. That means many water-soluble formats take 10-45 minutes to absorb. In contrast, oil-based formats can take as long as four hours! That’s a long time to wait. Researchers also found that CBD in water-soluble formations also positively impacts the body faster and more effectively.
That’s why we at MightyMe listened. Our products are up to 9 times stronger than standard CBD Oils. Their increased bio-availability means consumer’s body absorbs more of the active ingredient and takes the CBD to where it’s needed. Why wait ages for the effects of your CBD edible to kick in? Water-soluble is the way.
