How much Protein should you be consuming a day?
The recommended daily protein intake varies depending on several factors, such as age, sex, weight, physical activity level, and overall health goals. Protein is an essential macronutrient responsible for maintaining and repairing body tissues, supporting immune function, and producing enzymes and hormones.
For the average sedentary adult, a general guideline is to consume about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. However, this value can increase for individuals with higher physical activity levels, athletes, or those aiming to build muscle mass. In such cases, protein intake may range from 1.2 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight.
For example, a sedentary adult weighing 70 kilograms would require approximately 56 grams of protein per day (70 kg * 0.8 g/kg). On the other hand, an active individual or an athlete weighing the same 70 kilograms may need between 84 to 154 grams of protein per day (70 kg * 1.2-2.2 g/kg).
It’s essential to spread protein intake across meals to optimize its utilization by the body. Including a variety of protein sources, such as lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, nuts, and seeds, can help meet nutritional needs while providing a wide range of essential amino acids.
It is tricky for your body to digest more than 20g of protein per meal, so it is important to spread out your protein consumption throughout the day if you want to hit your protein targets. This is why we recommend putting 20g of protein in your delicious MightyMe high protein smoothies or protein breakfast smoothies!
